Defining the vestibular system

The vestibular system, consisting of parts of the inner ear and brain, is responsible for managing your balance and equilibrium. Damage to this system may result in sensations of spinning, tilting, or floating, causing you to feel off-balance.

Vestibular disorder causes and risk factors

Approximately 40% of adults over 39 experience vestibular disorders, leading to 58-60 million doctor visits annually. Even about 5% (3 million) of children aged 3+ may encounter dizziness or balance issues.

Typical disorders affecting vestibular system function include:

  1. Vestibular Neuritis

  2. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

  3. Vestibular Labyrinthitis

  4. Meniere's Disease

  5. Ototoxicity

  6. Perilymph fistula

  7. Acoustic Neuroma

  8. Stroke (CVA)

  9. Closed Head Injury / Traumatic Brain Injury (CHI/TBI)

  10. Post-Concussion Syndrome (refer to our Concussion Management page for additional information)

  11. Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Identifying vestibular issue symptoms

Vestibular dysfunction symptoms may arise from various pathologies and can be categorized by their anatomic origin as central (within the brain) or peripheral (within the inner ear's vestibular apparatus). Vestibular issue symptoms include:

  1. Dizziness

  2. Vertigo

  3. Imbalance

  4. Lightheadedness

  5. Disequilibrium

  6. Oscillopsia (visual disturbances during movement)

  7. Nystagmus

  8. Ocular tracking difficulties and eye fatigue

  9. Nausea

  10. Falls

  11. Challenges with walking

These symptoms might persist for a few minutes to several hours and can be intermittent.
